Exactly one hour later: At Nidhi’s apartment:

Door bell rings and Nidhi opens the door to Abhay and Anuj.

Abhay’s eyes bore into her. “May we come in, Miss Nidhi Chopra?”

Nidhi moves aside to let both men come inside. Abhay’s gaze sweeps through the whole apartment. It’s a single bedroom, neat, tidy and homey but by no means resembles the residence of SC’s granddaughter. Nidhi tries to divert him.

“Sit down Abhay. How did you climb those stairs?”

“Oh don’t worry about my legs. I had Pune’s No. 1 therapist. Under her expert guidance, I am almost back to normal.” His eyes dare her to continue the topic.

Anuj tries to intervene. “Abhay I think..”

Nidhi stiffens and glares at Abhay. “Oh really? But you were out of the country all this time, right? Ah I get it! You shipped your therapist along with your house and other staff members!”

“Nidhi..” Anuj’s voice of reason goes completely unheard a second time.

“But that therapist you know..liked to be mysterious..she probably thought I was Sherlock Holmes!” Abhay leans towards her in a secretive sarcastic way.

She folds her hands and takes another step towards him. “And you were where in abroad? London? Paris? Newyork? Or Japan..may be?”

By now Anuj has covered his face with his hands.

“Yaar PLEASE! Both of you! Shut up! Just..shut! up! God! Why did I even offer to join this..this sensible conversation is beyond me! Now, both of you sit down. Good. Now let’s talk like adults. Nidhi, I will start ok? 2 years ago, our company went public and as a way of celebrating, our Chairman and CEO, Mr AbhayShrivastav, went mountain climbing in Nepal and met with an accident. A very major accident. If that news leaked out, the share prices would crash and investors would panic, not mention the employees. So, other than me and a couple of other very trusted members of Abhay’s team, no one was informed of this accident. We told everyone that he was in Africa on a Jungle expedition and after that went to Australia. So everyone, including your grandfather believed the same thing. But we can’t fool so many people for such a long time. They started speculating and panicking in the recent time and hence the BOD meet which Abhay attended in person. That was not enough to put everyone’s worry to rest. Hence the grand entrance at tonight’s party.”

Seeing that he has managed to get her attention, he quickly continues.

“Coming to SC, our A Square is leading in the software market but we wanted to expand and enter the hardware side. Adds more force etc. I won’t bore you with the details. Abhay approached SC before the accident but SC was not for the merger. But he approached me a couple of months ago with this deal that if we wanted to merge his company with ours, then Abhay has to marry his grand daughter and have children through her. He didn’t say who it was and I didn’t ask. You joined as Abhay’s physiotherapist soon after that and I decided to wait until Abhay recovers before telling him about all this.
